The Reason
Through the Hope Classic, you can make a difference for
the hundreds of children and youth in British Columbia who have
spina bifida, and the family and friends that support them—and
be transformed yourself by their courageous, joyful stories.
Spina bifida is the number one disabling birth defect occurring
in one in 750 children born in Canada. Happening within the
first four weeks of pregnancy, it involves the incomplete
development of the spinal cord. In many cases, it is also
associated with a condition known as hydrocephalus, which
blocks the normal process of absorption of cerebrospinal fluid
around the brain.
Children with spina bifida have varying degrees of paralysis,
bowel and bladder dysfunction, and in some cases it also limits
hand function and includes visual, hearing and learning abilities.
Funds raised through the Hope Classic will go toward
the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of BC, which
supports awareness, education and research initiatives. The
SBHABC provides much-needed funds for BC spina bifida families
for equipment (standers, walkers, wheelchairs, etc). The Association
also offers educational scholarships, promotes recreational
events and organizes youth support groups.
With the support you are helping provide as a participant,
sponsor, volunteer or donor, children with spina bifida live
full and rewarding lives and contribute much to their communities—including
a great deal of inspiration and hope for you and me. And that’s
a pretty good reason.
